Namibia: Sossusvlei, Damaraland, Himba and Etosha

Windhoek, Sossusvlei, Damaraland, Opuwo and the Ongava Private Game Reserve (Etosha)

Twelve nights across Namibia, from the red dunes of the Namib to the granite country of Damaraland, the Himba homeland of the Kaokoveld and the waterholes of Etosha.

We begin gently in Windhoek, a small and easy capital where the long flights fall away. From here the first legs are flown in light aircraft, each one lifting you over country that changes completely from one stop to the next.

First, the dunes. Three nights at Kulala Desert Lodge put you beside Sossusvlei for the early light, when the shadows run longest and the colour is deepest. Then north to Mowani Mountain Camp in Damaraland, for the rock engravings of Twyfelfontein and a landscape of boulders and dry riverbeds.

From Damaraland we take to the road with a guide, up into the Kaokoveld for two nights at Opuwo and a visit to a Himba village, and then down to Ongava, a private reserve on the southern boundary of Etosha, for three nights given to the wildlife.

The journey closes with the drive back to Windhoek and a final night before the flights home.

Itinerary

Day 1 - 2

The Windhoek Luxury Suites, Windhoek (1-Night)

Welcome to Namibia. You land at Hosea Kutako International Airport, where our representative meets you for the drive into Windhoek, about forty minutes away. After the long flights the rest of the day is yours to rest.

Windhoek is a small, walkable capital, with craft markets and cafés if you feel like stretching your legs.

Day 2 - 5

Kulala Desert Lodge, Sossusvlei (3-Nights)

After breakfast you fly by light aircraft across the Khomas Highland and down into the Namib, landing at Geluk airstrip, a short transfer from Kulala Desert Lodge at the foot of the Sossusvlei dunes. The lodge has its own gate into the park, which puts you among the dunes for the early light.

Three nights give you three desert mornings and two full days: the dunes at sunrise, the pale clay floor of Deadvlei with its ancient blackened trees, Sesriem Canyon, and time to rest through the heat of the day.

A dawn hot-air balloon flight and a scenic helicopter flight can both be added, at extra cost.

Day 5 - 7

Mowani Mountain Camp, Damaraland (2-Nights)

From Geluk you fly north to the Twyfelfontein airstrip, deep in Damaraland, and a short transfer brings you to Mowani Mountain Camp, set among great granite boulders.

A full day here takes in the rock engravings of Twyfelfontein, a World Heritage Site, and a drive in search of the desert-adapted elephant of the region, which we hope to find moving through country that looks too dry to hold them.

Day 7 - 9

Opuwo Country Lodge, Opuwo (2-Nights)

We leave the airstrips behind and drive north with your guide, through Kamanjab and up into the Kaokoveld, to Opuwo Country Lodge on its hilltop above the town. It is a long drive, and a change of world.

A full day follows in Himba country, with a guided visit to a village.

Day 9 - 12

Ongava Lodge, Ongava Private Game Reserve (3-Nights)

The drive south brings you to Ongava, a private reserve of some 30,000 hectares on the southern boundary of Etosha. You arrive in time to settle in before an afternoon drive on the reserve.

Three nights here are given to the wildlife: full days through Andersson’s Gate into Etosha National Park and its waterholes, and on Ongava itself the night drives and guided walks that the national park cannot offer. Both black and white rhino live on the reserve, and they are among the species we hope to see.

Day 12 - 13

The Windhoek Luxury Suites, Windhoek (1-Night)

We drive you south to Windhoek, about five hours by road, for a final night at The Windhoek Luxury Suites.

On the last morning we transfer you to Hosea Kutako International Airport for your flight home. We hope you travel well.
