Botswana’s Great Zebra Migration

While the Serengeti migration is world-famous, few travelers know about Africa’s longest zebra migration. Every year, thousands of Burchell’s zebras travel up to 500km across Botswana, following ancient routes between the Okavango Delta and the Makgadikgadi Pans.

Why Witness the Zebra Migration?

  • One of Africa’s Longest Migrations: Covering over 500km, this journey rivals the famous Serengeti migration.
  • Incredible Wildlife: Follow the zebra herds accompanied by lions, cheetahs, wild dogs, and hyenas.
  • Exclusive Safari Experience: Experience the migration in remote, uncrowded locations with breathtaking landscapes.
  • Unparalleled Photography: Capture dramatic scenes of zebras moving across stark salt pans and lush floodplains.

“Based on anecdotal evidence before fences were erected, it was probably as big, if not bigger than the Serengeti migration, which is over a million wildebeest and 300,000 zebra,” explains Dennis Sizemore of Round River Conservation. “What’s fascinating is that, with the removal or disrepair of the fences, the zebras and a few wildebeest have started moving again, even though they hadn’t been able to migrate for 40 years. Now the zebra migration from Chobe down to Nxai Pan is the longest land mammal migration on the continent, over 500 kilometres.”

This migration plays a crucial role in sustaining the ecosystem. The growing zebra population passing through the Makgadikgadi Pans has spurred an increase in dung beetles, which in turn benefits other species such as meerkats.

“The driver of the migration is the nutritious grasses on the edge of the huge pans, where there are plenty of minerals in the soil,” Dennis continues. “The grazing there is so much richer than the Delta, where grass is full of moisture, but low on nutrition. So the wildebeest and zebra can get two to three times as much nutrition from the same volume of grass on the pans. Those increased nutrients allow them to have more young.”
